Hello!
It’s been a weird, uncertain month, even by the standards of 2022-23. On March 6, our lawyers made a motion to dismiss the case, and almost always those are just like “lol nope” kindsa things, but the judge said he’d consider it. And he did, until April 5, when he ruled against it. So, we will be in court Tuesday, April 11, and there will be some more motions in the morning, each of which entail various permutationy possibilities, but probably what will happen is that jury selection will start in the afternoon (and go on for days) because boom it’s trial time.
As for how I am: I am hanging in, but that is what I am doing. I am moving through my days and mostly relishing them (my god it’s SPRING and the dogwood is blooming and my loved ones are so many and so beautiful to me), but when I burst into tears trying to apologize to a dear friend because I couldn’t manage to attend an important thing in his life, he said, with such understanding, “ohhhh—no, I get it, you have no reserves.” So yes, I have no reserves. Please send reserves!! Just kidding…but also if we really do start trial on Tuesday, I will be asking for some specific support <3.
Oh and if you are local to Asheville or know folks who are, you/they can concretely sign up to offer support here! And wherever you are you can buy a t-shirt or mug or TAPESTRY to support us, here (it’s cute). And the newsletter for just case updates/press is here.
In recent press stuff: Here’s an article in Yes! Magazine that I’m in alongside a hero of mine, Kelly Hayes (not like, alongsiiiide, she was just also interviewed for it). Here’s also a really good podcast that explains the bigger Asheville context for us being targeted and features several people I adore:
In non-case stuff, I’ve been reading a lot of novels, mostly those my friend Christina recommends because she’s a genius and among her many jobs is YA book reviewer, and here are some I recently loved:
I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston
Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez
Ok…that’s it. Every update always feels like a non-update update because there’s always still a bit unknown, but I do know that I am either going to trial on Tuesday or I’m not, and I’ll be sure to tell you which it is, when I know.
sending you love. i also loved olga dies dreaming.
care bears?! love it
Just read your update and listened to radio broadcast. We are so impressed with the work your group is doing to help neighbors in need. To see you being punished for it is sickening. Just ordered our t shirts! Love and admiration Ray n Rose
